Big Agnes - Frying Pan SL2 Tent with Footprint

Category: Tent

There were so many things I liked about this tent, but when a simple thing like the foot print not fitting was definitely a deal breaker, especially at this price!!! There was no tension to hold it in place!!!

My first use of the Frying Pan SL2 was on a hiking/rafting trip down the Gauley River in WV. Two features immediately stood out to me. The first was how quick and easy the setup proved to be. From footprint to rainfly the process took less than 5 minutes. The design was well thought out and materials are high quality. The next feature that stood out is how lightweight the tent is. I've been carrying around the same seven pound tent for 10 years. Weight reduction was never a big enough priority; and I never want to sacrifice durability. With the Frying Pan SL2 I had nothing to worry about. After swapping the bag for a compression sack, and lashing the polls to my pack I was 2 pounds lighter. The footprint proved to be a significant upgrade for my battered tarp cut out. Despite this lightweight material the rainfly proved up to the task. Loved this Tent. Features that make it easy to recommend: speed of setup, lightweight and durability.

My boyfriend and I used this tent over a trip that was somewhat chilly and wet and it was a great shelter for us! The tent strapped on easily to my hiking pack without adding an excessive amount of weight. It's pretty easy to set-up and I was able to get it up by myself the first time without any instructions. I was really pleased with how durable the tent is and how roomy it is inside - my boyfriend is 6ft and some 2-people tents are a big snug, but the shape of the roof of this tent provides a great sense of space, and even he was able to sit-up comfortably inside. Inside pockets and loops are intuitive and were quite helpful. The fly offers the perfect amount of privacy and kept us warm, though I wonder if we would be too warm on a hotter day, but we were perfect in 50 degree weather. This was my first time with a Big Agnes product and I was really pleased - I look forward to more Big Agnes gear!

I purchased this tent primarily for Motorcycle camping. Pros: It is very light and packs down nice and small. I found it very easy to set-up by myself and I like that the included footprint can attach to the poles as well ( you don't have to choose which one you chase across the campground in the wind). Once set-up and staked out with the rain-fly it is very roomy inside, the dual doors and vestibules are great for storing motorcycle boots, helmet, saddlebags, etc. I also found the storage pockets on the inside very practical and convenient. Kept me and all my gear dry through light rain and heavy winds. Cons: My first trip with this tent was a President's Day weekend rendezvous in Death Valley. As usual I had all kinds of weather for the weekend. Friday was very windy and when I got into my tent that night I noticed a 5 inch long rip along the seam of the tent where one of the pole attachment straps is located (see photos). Also this tent is not meant for cold weather camping, it was very cold inside the tent at night on the nights that it was in the 35 - 40 degree range. REI exchanged the tent (no questions asked) for a new one when I returned, I'm hoping that this one holds up better.

After 3 nights in the Frying Pan, I woke up in 40° weather to rain pouring into my tent directly through the rainfly. It became completely saturated and no longer retained the ability to hold out water.

I had set the tent up twice at home to check the size for two people. It was a tight squeeze but ok for two nights. I liked the fact that it had doors on both sides for easy access. Unfortunately, the pole broke right were the two poles intersect making it difficult to repair. If I can get it repaired I will be happy to use it again. I'm not sure if other tents in this price range have such delicate poles.

I got this for my son and I to use on our first few backpacking trips. I've been amazed at how well it breathes. I'm 5'9" and he's 5'2" and we easily have enough room for the two of us. I love the double vestibules for all of our gear. I might start taking this on my solo car camping trips instead of my 4 person tent.

this is the perfect size for 2 people, it's super lightweight and easy to assemble too. the only thing I wished it had was a footprint big enough to cover the area of the cover overhang

Another great B.A. tent. Love that one can leave door(s) open in light rain. Vent is great. It's near the top so heat escapes. So far so dry.

I got the tent today and could not be more pleased. This thing is DESIGNED! Fast setup, ground sheet included, interior pockets, huge interior, clear from rain with doors full open (absent wind), even loops for earbud cords overhead. Nice!

I got this tent while it was on sale recently. I decided to go to Acadia National Park for a few days to test it out. Really well made. This past weekend we got some heavy rain. Tent and ground cloth held up perfectly. No leaks or problems. It was on par with the quarter dome from REI which my friend was using. This tent is a little heavier tough that weight is in the thickness and durability of the tent material. It was also convenient that everything came in this set. I didn’t have to hunt down a ground cloth or anything else like most of the other tents require you to do. I like how the rain fly clipped into the tent so there was no way it could come loose. The tent held up in cold conditions too (not that cold like 45-50) I was using my EMS 30 degree mummy bag that has a broken zipper so I got kinda cold in there (mainly because the humidity and wind). When I shut all the vents and limited outside air the tent got pretty warm. Other than it being a little on the heavier side it’s perfect for any trips you have planned. I’m going to take this tent backpacking in Yosemite next year for a few weeks. I’ll have more to say about how it holds up in harsh conditions and heavy use.

I was really excited about this tent. The price was reasonable and I love the brand. The set up was easy and could be done in under 10 minutes. I liked the fact that the 2 cross poles were attached to each other. It made set up even easier. Space was great for my partner and I, he is 6'2", so this is always a concern. Gear fit nicely outside in the vestibule.

For the price this tent is amazing. Great amount of space for two people. The double entry ways and vestibules are a real bonus. Super easy to set up and it comes with a footprint. Stayed dry through a moderate rain storm. Great value highly recommend.

The tent is easy to bag up and has clever design enhancements

I have not yet used my frying pan SL 2. But noticed some parts the poles have a curve to them. Is that normal or could they have bent in shipment? I set it up in the living room and it seems ok.

Some of the pole sections on this tent are designed to have a slight curve to reduce stress in certain segments.

I picked up my Frying pan sl2 and recently did a practice set up. Are the poles supposed to be kind of curved by design Or are they supposed to be straight? I am talking about BEFORE you attach to the tent. I am hoping they were not damaged in shipment.

Yes, you may recognize that some of the poles are curved (not kinked); this is to increase the vertical pitch of the walls which then creates more volume inside the tent.

Can this tent stand only with footprint and rainfly without tent body?

No, this tent cannot be set up without the tent body.

What size compression sack do you recommend for this tent?

A 15 liter compression sack is a good choice for the rainfly and body of the tent. As a friendly reminder, we do not recommend storing the tent in a compression sack for extended periods.

Austin

What are the dimensions for the cross pole? How many sections? What is the length/ width of each section? I purchased this tent from a garage sale and it came with out the cross pole. Thanks!

We recommend contacting TentPole Technologies or Big Agnes directly for more information on tent pole replacement options.

Does the packaged weight include the weight of the foot print?  How much does the foot print weigh?

No, although the tent comes with a footprint, the packed weight does not include the weight of the footprint. The weight of the footprint is 7.5 ounces.

Will packing this tent in a compression sack (not for storage, but in the pack on a backpacking trip) damage the tent?

This is something that backpackers do quite often. As long as you pull out the stakes and tent poles to carry separately, you can include the tent in a stuff sack or breathable dry bag to reduce volume in your pack.

Ryan

I need two inflatable mattresses to fit inside - which ones will fit appropriately? Does REI carry them?

This two-person tent will not fit two air mattresses, but can fit two 20 inch wide rectangular sleeping pads or two 25 inch wide mummy shaped sleeping pads.

What's the waterproof rating for the material?

The rainfly has a 1200mm PU coating and the floor has a 1500mm PU coating.

Cam W

What is the difference between a minimum trail weight and a packaged weight ?

The package weight for this tent includes the tent body, rainfly, poles, tent stakes and guy wire. The minimum trail weight includes just the tent body, rainfly and tent poles. This does not include the stakes, guywire or footprint.

Fonla

Can it be used in a shelter without the stakes?

Yes, the tent body will stand up by itself. If you want to use the rainfly (for privacy), the vestibules will lay across the doors unless you have a way to guy them out.
