Backpacker's Pantry - Shepherd's Potato Stew with Beef - 2 Servings

Category: Camp Kitchen

I was very surprised how good this was! A great meal to have on our Camping trip. I felt like I was eating home cooking.

This is one of the best freeze-dried backpacker meals I've ever bought. All my camp mates took a taste and were jealous.

I actually want to go hiking just to eat this. really hearty, really tastey, makes tummy happy, manly meal.

Had a good flavor and was hearty. Keep in mind though this is a STEW and as such is liquid in texture.

it is a hearty meal, but I recommend to use a little less water, taste good.

Generally, I enjoy Backpacker's Pantry. However, this particular recipe was a bit on the salty side for my taste and did not have great flavor. Basically a bit bland, with extra salt. As I said, I have really enjoyed other recipes from Backpacker's Pantry, but probably won't buy this one again. Was also a bit soupy at 6,500' when following the directions on the bag

I have used other brands of rehydrated meals and was disappointed overall with this brand. For trips over several days I like to mix in meals with potatoes in them, other than rice and pasta exclusively. The potato meals with this brand were not as good as expected. I was at 10,600 feet elevation and followed directions but it was a disappointing meal.

While I can't say I'd choose this to eat if I wasnt backpacking, it was among the better freeze dried meals I've had and the portion size was just right for me. I would have enjoyed it more with less water than recommended on the packaging. Still this meal was satisfying after a long day and a hard hike.

I usually enjoy most backpacker's pantry meals. This was the exception. Not sure if I got an old one (is that possible with freeze-dried?) but it tasted verrrrry bland. I did not notice an overwhelming salty flavor, in fact I noticed very little flavor at all. Would not go for this one again.

I took my friend and her 6-year old daughter on their first overnight backpacking adventure, and this was easily the best meal of the trip. We split the bag between the three of us and were still satisfied with our portions. The directions were spot on - no watery food here.

This food was great, but it gave us awful stink farts. Like honestly, so bad that I could smell my boyfriend's farts an entire tent over. Would possibly buy again, but only when I'm not going anywhere in a group setting for at least a day after.

Enough said! Those of you with kids understand the tight rope walk that is dinner time. Well, the trail is no place for pickiness, and this meal was a home run.

Not a Shepherds pie, but nice attempt at hinting at something like it ! Its a heavy stew - with some potato cubes. One of the worst hiking packs - and I've tried MANY over 25 yrs. Candidate for possibly the worst..

Lacks substance. 1/4th of the meal packet is beef & potato. The other 3/4th of the meal packet is stew. I would recommend eating out of a bowl after heating because it is cubersome to eat out of the meal packet.

I wanted Mary Janes naked burrito but REI had none in stock so I settled for this product. I will never buy this again. I have eaten lots of mre's in my military days but this product was the absolute worst.

Think of it like a beef and veggie soup that's thickened with potato. That's about the consistency. Very warming tasty and comfort food like. Simple. Not too heavy. I would buy it again.

Lightweight sustenance. The flavor was ok, the texture once cooked was really unappealing, and it did not sit very well. Wish I had carried the extra weight of fresh ingredients instead

It’s very filling. Tastes pretty good for trail food. I think it could feed more than 2 people unless you’re are starving. If you like stew, I think you’ll like this.

Brought this backpacking in Spain - it was one of our favorite rehydrated meals (I especially enjoyed that it has cheese, meat, veggies and saice all together)

I have eaten a lot of freeze dried food, but only recently tried Shepard's Stew. It was surprisingly good and will be one of my favorites from now on.

bought to try this ahead of my hike and so glad I did, will never buy again. seasoning tasted off and bits of chewy beef we're weird. just not for me.

I'll agree that this is a hearty meal, but I found it to be rather bland compared to other meals available. Won't be getting it again.

This was just what we needed after a long hike. The only thing better than the meal was the views from Mount Rainer.

I really wanted to enjoy this, but I ended up giving it to my dog. Not the best after a very long day of backpacking

Great flavors, easy to make, and stew, can't go wrong with stew while hiking/backpacking in cold weather

After a 4000' narley hike. Setup camp for the night and sat in the hammock enjoying every last bite.

Pretty tasty but expensive for what it is. Easy to use, I found enough for 1.5 not really 2 meals.

Good flavor, hydrated well. No real downside just not among my top favorite meals on this trip

Taste like instant mashed potatoes with beef bouillon.
