GSI Outdoors - Infinity Backpacker Mug

Category: Camp Kitchen

got this cup because of the great reviews,It fits the bill nicely for cup size and weight, the lid appears to stay on tightly so far, I even marked on the outside of the cup with measurement lines. I love that the cup is see through, so I could do that. Took it on a 4 day backpacking trip this past week, and it worked great. EXCEPT.....when you put hot liquids in it , in just a couple of minutes, your beverage starts to taste like plastic. I tried it with cocoa, and coffee several times. each time, the longer the beverage stayed in the cup, the more disgustingly like plastic it tasted. I also ate rice out of it, which didnt seem to pick up the toxic taste, but I definitely would not recommend this cup for anyone wanting to drink out of it.

Just returned from a 12-day backpacking trip to Philmont (Boy Scout camp in NM) where I used this mug for not only drinking but also for re-hydrating and eating my meals. The 2-cup size is perfect for most dehydrated meals assuming you are sharing between two people. I also like a large serving of coffee in the morning so it was definitely multi-purpose for me.

I love this light weight mug with its large capacity as I drink a LOT of tea in the mornings before heading out on the trail.

When everyone else had coffee, cocoa, or tea in their thin metal camp mugs on this last trip, it went cold in about 30 seconds. This mug is perfect! Large volume, lightweight, neoprene insulated sleeve, easily washable. I store small stuff inside of it when not being used to save space. The only things I could wish for would be 1) for it to somehow collapse (but that's not really feasible here), and 2) a slightly thicker neoprene sleeve to insulate just a bit more.

Love the measurement markings on inside of cup so you can read them with the insulated sleeve on the mug. Appreciate the large volume it holds, without being cumbersome in size. REALLY love that the cup and lid are dishwasher safe! :D Haven't used it in a COLD environment yet, but in mild to cool temps, the hot drink stayed hot/warm long enough to enjoy it to last sip. Have had the insulated sleeve off and on several times, as I've used the mug several times, and so far, everything is staying in perfect like-new condition.

This mug is great. The review above from Single Malt missed the super cool and well-thought out design: The print is in white and reversed, so that you leave the mug IN THE SLEEVE when you measure. You read the numbers looking INSIDE the mug, rather than looking from the outside. The white print against the black interior of the sleeve is easy to read.

but it works really well. Light weight. Small. Can be crammed into a empty space in a pack. Keeps coffee hot for long enough to enjoy it while taking care of stuff around camp. Great purchase for the money. No need to taste ramen by drinking out of a bowl, or lose all therrmal properties in a Sierra cup, or tote around a ridiculous heavy Yeti cup.

Bottom line: the GSI Infinity is a low cost, lightweight and highly practical item for your kit. In the process of outfitting group trips, I now have a full collection of camp mugs to compare. The GSI Infinity is the least expensive and the one I most often pack. The measuring increment marks are handy in meal prep; the lid is reliable for containment (note: it is just pressure fit, not a screwed tight seal); insulated sleeve and lid do a respectable job in rehydration (a DIY cozy makes even better); nice protected place to pack small items inside; effectively keeps your AM coffee hot and PM beer cold. The one criticism I have of pretty much all camp mugs is that they are straight walled and cannot be nested if packing multiples or for storage.

Really nice to have an insulated mug when it's 20° in the morning. Also nice to have a handle on the side that is flexible. Packs easy, with no handle sticking out. The top closes tightly enough that I felt secure getting in out of my tent with a cup of tea at night. Perfect cup for backpacking.

I bought this mug to replace my old backpacking mug, and I am very happy. I have actually ended up using it as both a mug and bowl replacement, saving space and weight. My old mug was small, 8oz is not very satisfying for making coffee on the trail. The size of this mug lets me have a much larger warm drink at night or in the morning, and it's the perfect size for using as a bowl for meals.

Bought this both for taking on hikes and for use around the office (rather than taking a new paper cup for every cup of coffee). It's lightweight and the cup itself is impossible to break. The outer holder, however, has started to unravel and keeps going! I'm thinking about just using the inner part.

Good, light cup. No problems. Just a note: if you're winter camping in 30F weather or below you'll still need a cozy to keep your drink hot for very long. That's not a criticism just passing on the experience.

Pros: The sleeve does an excellent job keeping hot liquid from burning your hands. The inner plastic cup has easy to read measurement lines and is lightweight. The lid is secure while the flip top secures in the open position and doesn't flop against your nose. The flip top, when closed, keeps the contents hot for a long time. Easy to clean and maintain. Very light and durable.

I got 2 of these in green for backpacking. The color is pretty and easy to see at camp in low light. The lightest mug ever, and it has a handle, lid, *and* liquid measures on the inside, which I use for cooking. When I get home, I just pop it out of the cover and throw it in the dishwasher. It insulates extremely well. It's perfect!

One star knocked because it doesn't fit in my car's cupholder. However, if you place this mug on the seat or floor and rolls around throughout the drive, it will not leak. Mine was placed on the floor filled full with hot tea. I took a turn pretty hard, the mug flipped over and stayed that way 18 miles later without a drop leaked.

I've had this mug for over a year. Coffee and soup stay hot. Feels good to hold this mug. And when the woven insulation started to fray a bit at the lip, I removed the cup and (carefully) used a lighter to singe and seal the thread ends. Problem solved. After reading one reviewer's comments about the o-ring I thought about how I've used my mug. I haven't had any problems with the lid seal, nor has the o-ring ever come off. I don't put the lid or the cup in the dishwasher and I do keep the seal clean (I don't find it necessary to remove the o-ring when cleaning the lid). I have noticed that it seems better to keep the flip top open when putting the lid on and taking it off to prevent putting extra pressure on the o-ring.

This cup is great! Light weight, easy to use and keeps my beverage warm. Tethered the Lid would be a nice option.

We bought two of these for a recent backpacking trip to the Eastern Sierras. Really couldn't be more pleased. Just clipped them to the packs, super light weight. We used them for coffee which it kept hot for a good long time and the outside of the cup never gets hot to the touch.

This mug is perfect for backpacking! It's only 4 oz. and it keeps my coffee/tea warm much longer then any plain plastic mug. It makes my backpacking mornings even more enjoyable and doesn't cost $45 like it's titanium double walled competitor.

I am perpetually surprised at just how long this plastic mug keeps my coffee hot. I find camping mugs to be much wider than regular mugs, which makes using a drip coffee maker a challenge. This one worked with my portable pour-over. It is very light weight. The strap is hefty and seems like it will last a long time.

I've been through a few mugs/cups in my search for perfection. This is the closest I've come. It's the coolest thing since sliced bread! The level of insulation that you get from the combination of high quality plastic and the neoprene sleeve is surprisingly good. Things stay warm for a long time in these cups, and I have taken to rehydrating meals in the mugs. Needless to say, they hold up to heat extremely well also. The weight of my mug came in at 3.8 oz... very light!! If I could complain about anything, it would be that the lids will pop off as pressure builds in the cup if you fill the mugs with hot water then shake them vigorously. This has not occurred under normal use, so I don't consider it an issue warranting concern. I have purchased 2 of these mugs for myself, and have given 3 away as gifts. Everyone loves them. The staff at REI also love this product and use it too.

Had been eyeing this mug online and purchased in-store after my 2-cup collapsible bowl got chewed through in the Grand Canyon by a rodent. I had been wanting an insulated mug for my coffee to stay warm in the chilly morning hours when camping and backpacking. This mug is very lightweight, perfect size for drinks or food, and easy to wash (as the insulated sleeve is removable).

Bought it before the Labor Day weekend and broke it in with three days in a row of morning camp coffee. Keeps it hot! Love the handle, the size, the light weight, the look, the feel, etc. My wife loves hers too. We are keeping them in our teardrop camper for regular use. Also love how these are so light weight that they will be ideal for backpacking trips as well!

I've used this on multiple occasions when the outdoor temp was 30-50 degrees. It kept my coffee hot for 1-2 hours. The lid seals so well that you actually need to have the mouthpiece open, if not then too much air is being pressurized into it and the lid will pop off. I really like that it is dual purpose with the measurement numbers marked on the cup.

I bought this 5-6 years ago when I first started backpacking as a luxury item. I have to say it has been on my favorite backpacking items I have ever bought. It works perfectly, is durable, and for me it is priceless to be able to enjoy my coffee separately from my breakfast in my normal camp cup. Would strongly recommend!

Love all the features of this mug - light weight, secure lid & flip top, actually keeps drinks warm. The hidden "genius" feature not mentioned in the product description is that the plastic mug has white liquid measurements stenciled on it the are readable inside the mug against the black inside of the insulating sleeve.

I have used this mug on 1 trip and am in love with it. I use it for tea as well as breakfasts: milk and granola cereal & oatmeal. The cover will try to pop off if you put boiling water and let it sit (oatmeal). The handle is a huge benefit. You need a plastic spork otherwise you'll scratch the bottom of the mug.

It's easy to take apart and clean. Used multiple times for camping and backpacking. Obviously not great for being ultralight but for the price, It's great for short trips. I've also used at home just to take coffee to work. Coffee stays inside for the most part as long as the lid is on properly.

I like to buy the dried food packets for camping and hiking. However, those packets are typically 2 servings, so I pour half into this mug, then add the water and eat. The insulated mug is excellent at keeping the food warm, and the lid keeps out bugs if I take a break while eating.

This has made our basecamp or car camping coffee so much more enjoyable. We don't have to rush to drink it before it gets cold, and no worries about debris or bugs getting it. It's great for eating out of as well. We love GSI and have many of their products.

Exactly what I thought it would be. Really light and durable. Great for backpacking. The only problem was it keep s drinks really hot, and that isn't really a problem, since it is supposed to. Love it. Going to get one for son and hubby as gifts.

I bought this mug a few months before my AT thruhike, and used it through the entire hike and other backpacking trips. Pros: lightweight, strap handle is perfect fit and snaps easily on my pack, better insulation than expected, lid stays pretty secure, easy to clean Cons: The main downside is that the cup itself has a tendency to slide out of the cloth holder, especially after daily use. I lost this mug a few times out of the holder (and luckily only had to backtrack a little bit because I happened to notice it was gone), which is a big problem when you have very few supplies and everything is essential. I "fixed" the issue by putting duct tape on the bottom of the plastic cup and making it adhere to the bottom of the cloth cover, but I had to redo it every time I gave the mug a good washing. Still, I've recommended this mug to others and even given it as a gift.

I purchased this cup for a light weight option for drinking coffee or eating oatmeal. The size and weight work great for backpacking and not taking up too much room or weighing you down. During its first outing the o ring went missing and therefore made everything leak while drinking with the lid. On its second trip it tipped over and proceeded to leak coffee in my brand new tent. Bummer for sure.i will probably seek to find a heartier o ring from a hardware store to try and salvage it.

Needed a light mug for backpacking, etc. Have many steel mugs/travel mugs, but they are too heavy. Pleasantly surprised at this mug, given some of the reviews. While it did hit the tip of my nose, I probably would not have even noticed except for the review. Not a problem for me. Kept my coffee reasonably warm for about an hour, about twice as long as I expected, given the meager insulation. Liked that the wrap came off, easier to clean and dry. Liked the handle as I can fit four fingers through for a tight grip and for the slight warming effect. Didn't like the lack of measurement markings, but isn't that what Sharpee markers are for? The lid fits reasonably well given that it does not screw on. Friction lid. It says 17 ounces (500ml) but it is actually just a bit bigger than that.

I do single serve mug cooking. This is similar to FBC (freezer bag cooking). But uses an insulated mug. My old mug was a bit tall; but was used for 20 years; so time for a change.

I got tired of my coffee or hot chocolate getting cold. I couldn't be happier with the mug. It is very light and and a better alternative than using a metal mess kit cup.

A perfect drink/eat container for trips when weight really matters. Design means cup doesn't get hot to touch even when holding very hot liquids. Easy to clean.

Very ideal for backpacking. Fits perfectly in my gsi pot. You can hold your warm drink without burning your hands thanks to the nice insulation

I bought this mug for backpacking. I now take it everywhere. Lightweight, easy to use and clean. Just make sure lip is solidly on and you’re good to go! After much use the outside thread unraveled slightly, but not enough to care. The cup separates and is easy to wash. I also noticed that the outside dries quickly when wet. More choice of colors at REI would be nice. I got my spouse a green mug, but had to order directly from the company an orange one. We both love this mug.

A gift from my daughter that gets used everyday. Starts out with overnight oats, rinsed out and finished with a cup of joe.

Super light, none drip lid, graduated markings you can see from the inside. Saves weight and performs multiple functions.

I bought myself one....carried it on several hikes....loved it....bought three more for friends who backpack as well!

This cup is pretty nice, as the cup and holder are both high quality for a low price. The weight is also quite low, and the materials are durable. The lid can be a bit finicky to get on and off, and the clip on the top can be somewhat annoying, but overall this is a great mug for backpacking. The measurements on the inside of the cup are actually super useful, and its quite handy being able to use the cup as a measuring cup for preparing food. Low price, but good value.

This is a light weight mug that is insulated well. It is comfortable to hold and easy to lash onto a pack.

Super light, keeps things warm. Really love it. Also, not expensive at all!

Works as advertised: kept my coffee hot, light weight and sturdy. The lid is very secure. It is large enough to rehydrate food in it for you backpackers out there. But the flip top lid gets your nose wet as you drink because liquid accumulates there when you close the tab (from condensation or from sloshing around). I had to keep wiping my nose. It is just a little nuisance but enough to make me take it back. Too bad because I really liked it overall.

I've used this in half a dozen backpacking trips and as many car camping trips. For backpacking, the light weight is great. It makes a great cup/bowl or a beverage container. The insulation isn't fantastic, but it does keep a cup of coffee hot for 30+ minutes easily which is all the time I need. Two of these pair perfectly with the Java Press. And while a little bulky, it's definitely one of those luxury items that's well worth packing around.

Gasket fell off and got lost day 1 of 3 week JMT hike. Poor design - it's the right size, shape, volume, but geeze...day 1?!

I know, this is a lot to write about a mug!

I tried the Sea to Summit mug first, but it began to leak so I switched to the GSI mug which has performed beautifully! I am extremely happy with this mug for taking coffee on the subway and switching it water at the gym with no coffee aftertaste!!! I poured boiling water into the mug with instant oatmeal, closed the lid, stuck it in my backpack and ate it three hours later. It remained tightly sealed in my backpack.

This mug seems lighter than many other options and the price is ok. The insulation kept my drink somewhat warm in 50F temps. I would like a lid that I can set down without dirtying parts that contact food or my mouth (think raised rim around the outside of the mug-side of the lid, to allow it to rest on a surface without contamination). That being said, this mug is serviceable and I will use it.

My father-in-law and I have each used these mugs for two summers, and we can't say enough good things about them. They really DO keep your coffee hot, and the capacity is nice. I also had some fraying on the bottom of the cup, but some Freesole took care of that problem easy. If the bottom of this mug fit in my car's cup holder, I'd use this as my day-to-day coffee mug too.

I picked up this guy on a whim and am so glad that I did! Before this mug, I had a smaller mug that I used for coffee and hot chocolate on trips, but it didn't contain as much as I needed. This guy solved that issue! I love that it holds so much and has measurement markings on the inside, so you can use it to measure for cooking as well. The insulated holder on the outside

I used this for my coffee. Kept it very warm, had to take off lid just to get it to cool down. Wish they had better color choices. It is light weight and worked well.

O.K. I've been a member of REI for more than 40 years and will be for life. I have used a lot of GSI gear in my thousands of miles of backpacking and it's always been great stuff. I would have given this cup 5 stars except for one thing. Unlike the old version of this cup, GSI finally printed measurements on the outside of this new model, which is a great idea except they printed them backwards, in reverse. It's like they placed the stencil in reverse during the manufacturing process. I talked to several people who have this same cup and theirs is the same way. This may sound nit picky, but I am giving one star because I can't believe a company like GSI would let who knows how many of these out the door with this flaw, and it kind of ticks me off. There is no way it was printed like this on purpose as you can't see through the dark plastic to read it from the opposite side. My opinion of GSI just took a 180.

Love this mug. Holds a good size cup of coffee or tea and is super light and ideal for bicycle touring. The sleeve does a good job of insulating and makes the cup comfortable to hold. I bought one for myself last year and this one is for my wife who will be touring with me on occasion. pairs perfectly with the GSI Outdoors Ultralight Java Drip Coffee Maker

Light weight cups and well insulated. little pricey but what isn't when it come to light weight.

Lightweight, insulated (the inner cup is easily removed from the insulation) and a really good size. The only thing that prevents this from getting 5 stars is the fact that there are no markings on the inner cup. I etched my own ounce markings on the see-through, plastic inner cup, but for 10 bucks they be included by the manufacturer.

I returned this because it turned out to be very bulky and inconvenient to deal with.

After searching for the best value(weight, durability, price) for a camping mugI recently had a friend loan me one of these cups for a backpacking trip. I purchased one immediately when I returned home. For the price it's lightweight, insulated and seems like it will last for years of backpacking.

Purchased this for my wife on our hike through the Guadalupe Mountains as it is mandatory that she has coffee in the morning. She like that it was lightweight, a flip top sip lid and the handle was a strap type handle when made it easy to slip in her pack with it catching on to anything.

I bought two of these lightweight, backpacking mugs. They easily clipped to our packs with a caribiner and very useful in enjoying coffee in the morning. The cup inside has measurement markings that helped with cooking, and it slides out for easy cleaning. No plasticy smell.

This mug had everything I wanted , except one. Light , perfect size , durable, had a lid - and you could close it. You can put your name on the cozy. It keeps coffee hot. The one thing it didn't have was a calibrated scale. I took a sharpie and fixed that. Now it's perfect.

Very happy with these. Took them motorcycle camping so both weight and space are priorities. This mug keeps the coffee nice and hot. Love the lid. Outside cozy slides off for easy cleaning. Inner mug is clear and has measuring lines if you need them. Great product.

I've been using this mug daily for about 2 months now. Bought it for backpacking, but ended up just using it for green tea on the regular. It is super lightweight. Retains heat moderately well, and comfortable to hold with hot liquids. Great cup. Great price.

I love this cup so much that I bought it for a friend and my husband and my son. Also wanna point out inside of the cup are measurement markings. Internal plastic cup can be easily removed from the insulating exterior to be washed. I wish they came in my colors

It's a cup. I didn't burn my hand drinking hot coffee out of it and coffee stayed about as warm as I expected. If you pull it out of the nylon sleeve, there are measures which are pretty good for cooking. Price wasn't too bad either. Can't complain.

This mug is a good light weight mug that comes with a little cozy so your hand don't burn when you put your coffee in it. I take yhis mug with me while backpacking. In the morning I make one cup of coffee to go with break fast and than another to drink while I'm packing up. When I'm all done with my coffee I just clip it to my pack with a caribiner. I like that the cup slips in and out of the cozy with ease. The mug doubles as a measuring cup due to the built in marks. I took this mug on a backpacking trip a couple weeks ago and at dinner I made lemonade in it and forgot to rinse it out. In the morning I was kicking myself think that my coffee was going to taste like lemonade but to my surprise I dumbed out the left over lemonade rinsed it out and my coffee was awesome. The only thing that could make this mug better is if the flip top kid would lock closed. Right now it flips closed but it doesn't feel very secure. I feel if I were to knock it over it would spill. But other than that they really aren't any improvement that can be made!

Keeps beverages hot for a pretty long period of time. Lightweight. Love that interior has graduated units marking cups/mL for adding hot water to backpack meals! Only complaint is the second one we bought, the outer sleeve kept slipping off.

extremely happy with my purchase. I've only used it once on a one-night over night trip so far, but thought is was extremely light weight, very well insulated for hot beverages, and easily slips out of the insulated wrap for cleaning.

this mug has gone on a few trips with me. it holds up in my pack just fine but it does not keep liquid hot for any length of time. fine for on the trail when you are not spending a lot of time sitting around in the morning anyway.

Bought this about a year ago, and have used it quite a bit. Love the handle, and the locking lid. Makes it so easy to carry even when you have other stuff in your hands. Holds plenty of fluid, and keeps it warm for a long time!

Bought 2 of these...one for me and one for my boyfriend. Loving it so far. It has everything I've always wanted in a camping cup...a lid with a closure, easy to clean, lightweight, and a handle that doesn't burn my flesh.

This is so light that there is no reason not to clip it to your pack on your next adventure! It has measurements which are useful when rehydrating food. It also holds heat quite well so it’s perfect for morning coffee

It's really light, has graduations for measuring hot water, removable insulation, a collapsible handle, a lid, a spout for pouring scalding water into your chili mac, and even a nifty rubberized non-slip base!

Put a rubber band around the plastic cup or you will find it gone somewhere along the trail if you have it attached to the outside of your pack. Otherwise, this is a cheap, functional and durable coffee mug.

I really like this mug! I like that my hot cocoa was kept warm as I broke down my camp site. Allowing me to sip as I worked. I also appreciated having a measuring scale. I also like the price.

It's a great cup, but the only problem is that if you hang it off your bag you might lose the insert (cup part) from the sleeve. I lost mine once. Otherwise it's an awesome cup for a good price.

light weight and easy to clip on. it does not keep my drinks warm for long, and the lid flips open easily so you have to be careful to not spill. Still a nice light weight cup...

This mug is an excellent, light-weight, addition to your pack. It keeps hot drinks hot, it cleans easily, and its incredibly light-weight, so barely adds any weight to your gear.

Perfect for when I am drinking tea. Just the right size, easy to clean, and the sleeve/handle does a good job of insulation and helps me to hold the cup while the tea is hot.

Only 3.5oz, keeps coffee warm, liner is easily removed for cleaning and the top can be sealed to keep insects out. Wife also has one and loves it!! Highly recommend it!

easy lightweight cup and does not seem to impart any flavor or scent of different liquids. Handle is pretty sturdy, but not always to use without holding the cup.

Lightweight, holds two cups of water, nice cap closure. Sleeve is helpful. Doesn’t burn your lips with coffee. A little bulky but works just as intended.

Keeps stuff warm. Easy to clean. Love the measurement inside the cup. Cup leaks around the top when you're moving and the top is closed.

Perfect size to be a bowl and a mug. Very lightweight and the insulated sleeve is a plus! Also had nice graduations for measuring

I bought this mug about a week ago and I've used it for work, home, and will use it for my hiking/camping trips. I love this mug.

I wish it had a real handle (that could fold down) rather than holding the material handle. Just would feel more secure.

Doubles as a measuring cup, just take out the inner cup. Very very light, and keeps drinks nice and warm. Easy to clean.

Love this thing: oatmeal, coffee, tea, freeze dried meals (has measuring lines inside container)... it did it all!

It's light weight, insulated, easy to clean, and has a lid to keep the bugs out. What's not to love? It's perfect

I was looking for an ultralight mug and this is perfect. Weighs a few ounces less than my previous mug.

Great little cup. Kept coffee warm and cold cold!! Only wished the handle was on I could attach to pack

Keeps drinks hot (or cold) and is very light; weighs about 4 ounces. Worth every ounce, lid is great.

Great cup! Super light weigh, easy to clean, isolation works very good and the lid seals very tight.

I like it. Everything you can wish from a camping mug. Very light, sturdy and keep you coffee warm.

Perfect coffee mug for the morning. Seals well and extra light if you’re trying to conserve ounces

We have been hiking on some pretty cold days. It keeps my coffee hot without burning my hands.

Kept things warm, easy to use and fill with other items. Easy to clean. Outer casing comes off

This cup is awesome! Easily removeable from insulated sleeve for cleaning. Lightweight.

The lid will no longer fit the cup. Its like the lid shrunk and is to small.

Solid product for the price. Measuring cup marks on the side are very helpful

This cup retains heat vry well, also the measuring cup markings are a bonus.

Nice mug but the external covering stains easily and does not clean well.

I liked it, but wished it was a metal cup rather plastic like material.

Sierra cups are fine when backpacking, but this feels luxurious.

Keeps hot drinks hot. It's lightweight. And the price is right.

these work great. This new cover and lid make it even betterr

A perfect light weight coffee mug for camping and backpacking

Nice cup! Convenient for backpacking. Durable, retains heat

Used on a Mt Rainier summit. Kept the hot stuff hot

Kept my coffee hot. Light weight and easy to clean.

Super lite weight. Keep liquids warm for some time.

Does what it is supposed to do and is very light

Will this cup fit into the cupholder of the common bag chair used for watching kids sporting events and at the camp site?

Although this mug will fit in the cup holder of many folding camp chairs, we are unable to confirm this will work for you as the size of the cup holders varies per chair.

janvet

can it be microwaved or washed in dishwasher?
